It’s important to note that in 2021, Portugal passed a law that prevents employers from contacting staff outside of working hours. Furthermore, companies are obliged to cover any costs that come with working from home. Already, this tells us that Portugal is certainly progressive when it comes to the hybrid/remote model.
The steps the Portuguese government have taken speaks volumes. Not only are they giving freedom back to employees, but they are really putting their people first. The law prevents surveillance of employees, while giving parents of children under the age of eight the right to automatically work remotely. Furthermore, there is no discrimination – any employee who works from home will not be paid less than those in the office.
While working from home saves on commuting costs, things do add up. As mentioned, employers have been asked to cover a portion of costs for electricity and internet bills.
A popular destination
It’s not just people living in Portugal who see it as a haven for remote working. Many UK residents, who are embracing the rise of the ‘workation’, are choosing Portugal as their remote working destination.
It means more IT and technology professionals are embracing the opportunities the country offers. A standout initiative is the Digital Nomad Village on the island of Madeira, which aims to attract remote employees. Another term we have seen more of is the ‘anywhere workers’, so initiatives like this will only attract the best!
Another key location in the rise of digital and technology nomads is the Algarve. From the low cost of living to the friendly atmosphere, it really is gaining traction not only with tourists, but with remote workers.
