IT Management Jobs: how to climb the career ladder

IT Management Jobs - Career Progression

IT management jobs…they are the golden chalice when it’s time for the next step in your career. So where do you start so you can secure that dream IT job?

It’s a great feeling to know you’re ready for progression…but, how do you show that you are ready? Your technical skills will speak for themselves. It’s about showing the softer skills too – after all, management all comes down to the people around you.  We’ve decided to highlight a few things to work on so you can start your climb to the top!

What you do well in your current IT job

To be a good manager, you must demonstrate that you can manage your current responsibilities like a champion. It will show that extra responsibilities won’t come to affect you.

It’s about more than great results, increased revenue and big achievements. Was there a time you inspired your team and helped them flourish? Even if you were not directly managing these people, it shows that you are able to bring a team together and would be a great fit for IT management jobs.

People skills

Perhaps one of the most important skills of being a manager…relationships with your team. If you want to show that you can relate to the people you work with, while providing clear direction, start with observing the team dynamics. What makes them happy, are there any frustrations and how do different individuals work?

This isn’t something you’ll be able to do in one day. Conveying how you handle different personality types will help you stand out from the crowd. Most importantly, of course, being an example to your colleagues…whether you are their manager or not. It’s likely they will have glowing things to say to senior management if you do this.

Strategy and problem solving

To demonstrate you can handle a strategy, start think of long term projects you worked on and how you adapted. How did you prioritise tasks? How much time did you dedicate and did you achieve the goals of the project? Furthermore, every strategy has its obstacles. Highlight times you were able to jump in and problem solve. It’s also a good chance to reflect. Were there any times you struggled? Knowing where you can improve, and how, will really help when it comes to management roles. You will recognise when your team is finding something difficult and step in as a good manager does!

Where are the IT management opportunities?

Your quest for an IT management role doesn’t necessarily have to begin with a new company. Is there a possibility for a promotion in your current company? If there is an opening that you feel you’re ready for, express your interest right away. It shows loyalty and a real desire to progress.

If internal opportunities aren’t available, you can still ask about it. This is your chance to show how much you want to progress in this company.
